You can give a gift this season that has double the gift giving power! When you purchase a gift from any of these organizations, you are empowering an at-risk individual to continue working and provide food and necessities for their families.
The following organizations provide work for those who are at-risk for being sold into human-trafficking. Those who have been rescued from trafficking, remain at-risk, as long as there is not a means for them to be employed. Companies like these are creating meaningful work opportunities for these individuals, and without our purchasingpower, these organizations simply could not exist.
As you look over the list of teachers, babysitters and others you plan to buy Christmas gifts for, why not consider shopping at one of these sites?
My friend Karen sent me some of these websites, and if you know of any more, please add to the list!
The Starfish Project creates jewelry for women and children. It has grown to support approximately 35 women in 2 different Asian cities. This organization provides opportunities for women to heal and grow through counseling, vocational training, language acquisition, family education benefits and health care access, as well as providing housing in their women’s shelter. Check out the Starfish Project’s vision and products here: http://www.starfish-project.com/index.aspx.
Consider buying a pair of fun “punjammies” from the International Princess Project. The International Princess Project states their mission is to “Establish self-sustaining enterprises in partnership with indigenous organizations that provide for physical, emotional and spiritual needs of women formerly enslaved in prostitution; AND advocate for women enslaved in prostitution around the world.” Visit the Internation Princess Project website here: http://www.intlprincess.org/.
Finally, check out the Not for Sale website. This is an organization I have referred you to before. They have a good variety of gift options for both male and female here: http://notforsalestore.org/ .
The Not for Sale organization reminds us, ”Every purchase you make is an action to end slavery“. When you give a gift from any Fair Trade organization, keep the organization’s information card attached to the gift. Not only will you be giving a gift from the heart to those you care for, but you will be spreading the word for freedom. That’s a gift that has more value than many of the trinkets we tend to pass along during the season.
Happy gift giving!
